Bill Clinton in KY

So, why is Bill Clinton campaigning in Kentucky?

Because Mitch McConnell is in trouble.

Trust me. He's not doing just to be nice to Bruce Lunsford. If Bruce was more than 5 down, the DSCC and Clinton would be focused elsewhere. Public polls show the race consistently tied. What's more, it has been months since McConnell has been above 50.

If Mitch McConnell, the Republican Leader in the U.S. Senate, is in trouble -- the GOP is in trouble.

Mitch may well win the race. He always does well in tough races and he's a champion of the negative campaign.

But with Bill Clinton campaigning there ... and with Obama pulling to within 8 in Kentucky, Lunsford has a good shot.

And in 2 years, Jim Bunning is up. Will 2010 be the year Ben Chandler makes the leap from the House to the Senate?

Good post Andy. Bill hit it out of the park with his visit to Bowling Green on Friday. He may very well be the greatest public speaker in history!

Don't forget that his visit won't just have a ripple effect in the Senate race, but the very tight house race we have here in KY-2 as well.

As for Bunning in 2010, Greg Fischer might be interested in that seat as well. He's stayed pretty active in the party since being being beaten in the primary by Lunsford.

Yeah, I only hope Senator Lunsford can run his office as well as he ran Vencor.

I think Senator McConnell is fine, not because of anything brilliant he has done this time around, there are just too many people in Kentucky that aren't pulling any levers for Bruce Lunsford. KY Dems screwed up by not bringing an old hand out of retirement (Patton, Brereton Jones, hell even John Y. Brown) and putting them in the race--any of those guys would be up 5-7 points right now. It will be funny if Lunsford loses and the Dems have 59 seats in Senate because of it.

Bunning isn't running in 2010 unless President Obama has so screwed up the country by then that anyone could get elected under the republican banner (see 1994). If that is not the case then the party will push hard to put someone else in that spot. Ron Lewis retiring this time around really hurt the GOP because that would have been a great spot for him.
